Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) has the characteristics of hard and brittle, high crystallinity, Flame resistance, high thermal stability, high mechanical strength, excellent electrical performance and strong chemical resistance.
It belongs to the special engineering plastics, is the first large varieties of special kinds of engineering plastics because of its long-term heat resistance up to 220℃. It is known as “the world’s sixth-largest engineering plastics”. It’s also one of the “Eight”aerospace materials. PPS resin can be used to produce a series of new materials such as the glass fiber reinforced materials, composite filling enhanced materials, enhanced toughening materials, alloy materials, wear-resisting lubrication materials, conductive materials and other products series by filling and enhancing modification. The modification can be widely used in national defense, aerospace, electronic communications, auto machinery, household appliances, medical equipment, oil chemical industry, medicine, food, environmental protection and other industries. It’s indispensable new materials for the upgrading and development of traditional industries.
The basic features/characteristics of PPS
(1) Excellent heat resistance
The melting point of PPS is higher than 280℃, the thermal deformation temperature is over than 260℃, long-term use of temperature is 220℃-240℃. It will break down at 700℃ in air and will remain 40% of the weight at 1000℃ inert gas. Both short-term heat resistance and long-term continuous use of thermal stability are superior to all engineering plastics.
(2) Good mechanical performance
PPS is a kind of high crystalline material, which makes PPS to be composite materials with high mechanical strength, high surface hardness and high modulus. The tensile strength can reach 230MPa and the bending strength is 330MPa. By adding toughening modifier, PPS composite modification can have high strength and impact resistance, and bear the characteristics of greater torsion.
(3) Flame retardant
It has flame resistance, the oxygen index is 47-53. The flame resistance can reach to the V-0 level of UL94, the American security testing laboratory company. In the production of flame retardant products, no flame retardant is required to maintain the high mechanical properties of the material itself, and also avoid the excessive amount of harmful substances caused by the addition of flame retardants.
(4) Excellent chemical resistance
No solvent which can dissolve PPS under the temperature of 200℃ had been found at present. PPS can bear the low temperature of -70℃and it is able to adjust the salt fog environment condition for a long time. The resistance to inorganic acid, alkali and salt is very strong (except for strong oxidizing acid).
(5) Good dimensional stability of finished products
The molding shrinkage rate is very small; Low water absorption rate, small linear thermal expansion coefficient; Good dimensional stability will still show under high temperature or high humidity, and the molding shrinkage rate is 0.2 ~ 0.5%.
(6) Excellent electrical performance
Even in high temperature, high humidity, high frequency conditions still remains excellent electrical performance. Volume resistivity is1015 Ω. M, and the dielectric strength is 12 ~ 18kv /㎜, the electric arc resistance up to 200 s. as in electrical material can replace a thermoplastic thermosetting plastic. It has become a kind of thermoplastic material, which can replace thermosetting material in electrical materials.
(7) Good wear resistance
By filling the solid lubrication material, making the PPS composite material with good resistance to bite, low friction coefficient, wear resistance, self-lubrication, silencing shock absorption, and the density is small.
(8) Light weight
The density of PPS composite materials is about 1.5 ~ 1.9g/cc. The density of aluminum alloy is around 2.7 g/cc, and the density of steel is around 7.8g/cc. It can greatly reduce weight, improve carrying capacity.
(9) High comprehensive benefits
During to the reason that PPS material belongs to thermoplastic polymer materials, the production process finish by processing, injection molding, extrusion and other ways. Less production process, simple operation, and it can be continuously produced. From raw materials to production molding, the production time is short, and the production process is simple. It has a high degree of automation, and less pollution, little energy consumption, high production efficiency and can be recycling. The anti - aging ability of PPS makes its service life long, it can be used for 40 ~ 50 years. The performance decrease is less and it can reduce resource waste.
